Building a Career from an IT Apprenticeship

As a Senior Systems Engineer, aspiring Software Developer, and crypto enthusiast, my journey in the tech industry began with an IT apprenticeship. In this blog post, I’ll share my personal experiences and insights on how an apprenticeship can serve as a launchpad for a successful and fulfilling career in the ever-evolving world of technology.

The Power of Apprenticeships:

Gaining Practical Skills:

  • Apprenticeships provide hands-on experience and practical skills that are highly valued in the industry. While theoretical knowledge from university is important, the ability to apply logic practically is crucial and takes time and skill to develop. Apprentices are often exposed to a wider range of areas and learn on the job, supplementing their coursework.
  • Throughout my apprenticeship, I worked on numerous projects that helped me develop essential technical skills. From simple tasks like data destruction and troubleshooting Windows 7 to more complex projects like managing backups and understanding Windows environments, domains, administrative credentials, and security groups, I gained a wealth of practical knowledge.

Building a Professional Network:

  • Networking during your apprenticeship is crucial, as it can open doors to future opportunities. While some may prefer to remain hermits and avoid social media, having an online presence can help you in ways you may not realize, potentially bringing in your next job or connecting you with someone to share knowledge with.
  • During my apprenticeship at Hartlepool College, I saw fellow pupils go on to become software developers at a games company, IT support staff at Northgate, and even secure internal positions at the college. These success stories demonstrate the diverse paths an apprenticeship can lead to.

Exploring Different Roles and Specializations:

  • An apprenticeship allows you to gain exposure to various roles and specializations within the tech industry. Depending on your team and the company’s IT infrastructure, you may have the opportunity to work with a wide range of technologies and systems.
  • During my apprenticeship, I discovered my passion for system engineering and system architecture through working with PowerShell and batch scripts. I loved automating tasks and understanding the inner workings of Windows. This hands-on experience helped shape my career path and interests.

Transitioning from Apprentice to Professional:

Continuous Learning and Skill Development:

  • Continuous learning is essential in the fast-paced world of IT, as it’s easy to fall behind if you don’t stay updated with the latest technologies and industry trends. Always learn from your peers, seek out clever individuals, and engage in online forums. Tools like Feedly can be a massive help in staying informed.
  • Pursue online courses, attend workshops, and participate in hackathons to expand your knowledge and skills. Check out my public profiles for more information on my approach to learning.

Taking on Additional Responsibilities:

  • As you learn more and delve into systems, both you and your team will become more comfortable with introducing you to new systems and areas of IT, provided you consistently perform well. If you excel in your current tasks, you’ll be given opportunities to take on more challenging projects.
  • Throughout my apprenticeship and early career, I took on projects that demonstrated my growth and potential. From mastering Windows services and architecture to managing a global service desk and obtaining Cyber Essentials certification, I continually expanded my skill set and contributed to major initiatives.

Seeking Mentorship and Guidance:

  • Mentors play a crucial role in your career journey, helping you navigate challenges and make important decisions. Your mentor could be your manager, an online tutor, or any experienced professional willing to guide you. Make use of their knowledge and experience, and don’t be afraid to share your own experiences and challenges with them.
  • I’ve been fortunate to have had excellent mentors throughout my career, from my first IT manager to my college mentors, Darren and Steve, who were incredibly helpful and enthusiastic. My current manager at PFF Packaging, Ryan Crear, has been an exceptional mentor, providing guidance and support during challenging times.

Embracing New Opportunities and Challenges:

Transitioning to a Senior Systems Engineer Role:

  • My journey from an apprentice to a Senior Systems Engineer has been filled with continuous learning, taking on additional responsibilities, and embracing new challenges. The skills and knowledge I gained during my apprenticeship laid the foundation for my success in this role.
  • As a Senior Systems Engineer, I’ve led critical security and infrastructure projects, such as migrating to Bitdefender GravityZone, implementing security features like LAPS, and overseeing the transition to Microsoft 365 Defender. These experiences have further enhanced my technical expertise and leadership abilities.

Pursuing Software Development:

  • As an aspiring Software Developer, I recognize the importance of continual learning and staying updated with the latest programming languages, frameworks, and tools. My experience as a Systems Engineer has provided me with a solid foundation in understanding the intricacies of software systems and how they integrate with the overall IT infrastructure.
  • I’m currently focusing on expanding my knowledge of programming languages such as Python and JavaScript, as well as exploring frameworks like React and Node.js. By leveraging online resources, personal projects, and engaging with the developer community, I’m actively working towards transitioning into a software development role.

Exploring the World of Crypto:

  • My interest in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology aligns with my career goals of staying at the forefront of emerging technologies and understanding their potential impact on various industries. As a crypto enthusiast, I’m fascinated by the decentralized nature of blockchain and its ability to revolutionize financial systems, supply chain management, and more.
  • I believe that exploring the world of crypto can open up new opportunities for IT professionals, whether as blockchain developers, smart contract auditors, or crypto analysts. By staying informed about the latest developments in the crypto space and actively engaging with the community, I’m positioning myself to contribute to this exciting and rapidly evolving field.

Lessons Learned and Advice for Aspiring IT Professionals:

Embrace Lifelong Learning:

  • In the IT industry, staying curious, adaptable, and open to new learning opportunities is crucial for long-term success. Embracing a mindset of lifelong learning will help you stay relevant and valuable in an ever-changing landscape.
  • Throughout my career, I’ve made a personal commitment to continuous learning, whether through online courses, hands-on projects, or engaging with the IT community. This dedication to growth has been instrumental in my progress and has opened up new opportunities along the way.

Take Risks and Step Out of Your Comfort Zone:

  • Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks and embrace challenges that push you out of your comfort zone. Stepping into unknown territory can be daunting, but it’s often where the most significant growth and opportunities lie.
  • Throughout my career, I’ve taken risks by taking on new responsibilities, exploring emerging technologies, and transitioning into new roles. While these experiences were challenging at times, they ultimately led to personal and professional growth and helped shape my career path.

Build a Strong Professional Network:

  • Building and maintaining a strong professional network is essential for success in the IT industry. Your network can provide valuable insights, support, and opportunities throughout your career.
  • Attend industry events, join online communities, and engage with professionals on platforms like LinkedIn. Don’t hesitate to reach out to experienced individuals for advice or guidance, and be willing to offer your own insights and support to others in return.
  • Remember that networking is about building genuine relationships based on mutual respect and shared interests. Take the time to nurture these connections, and you’ll find that your professional network will become an invaluable asset in your career journey.

My journey from an IT apprentice to a Senior Systems Engineer, aspiring Software Developer, and crypto enthusiast has been a testament to the power of apprenticeships, continuous learning, and embracing new challenges. By sharing my personal experiences and insights, I hope to inspire and guide others who are considering or currently pursuing a career in the tech industry.

Remember that an IT apprenticeship is just the beginning of a lifelong journey of growth and discovery. Embrace the opportunities that come your way, stay curious and adaptable, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The tech industry is constantly evolving, and by committing to continuous learning and taking on new challenges, you’ll be well-positioned to make your mark in this exciting and rewarding field.

As you navigate your own career path, remember to build a strong professional network, seek out mentorship and guidance, and stay true to your passions and goals. The world of technology is full of endless possibilities, and with dedication and perseverance, you can achieve great things.

So, to all the aspiring IT professionals out there, I encourage you to embrace the power of apprenticeships, take risks, and never stop learning. Your journey may be filled with challenges and uncertainties, but with the right mindset and a commitment to growth, you’ll be well on your way to building a successful and fulfilling career in the ever-evolving world of technology.
