The Beginning of the End

Picture this: It’s 2021, and I’m the proud owner of a gaming PC that’s been my faithful companion for two years. It’s weathered multiple house moves without a hitch. Then, in a moment of carelessness, I move it while it’s still on. Poof! Just like that, it’s gone. No signs of life. Nada.

The Struggle is Real

For the next two years, this PC became my white whale. I tried everything:

• Checked all connections (multiple times)
• Tested the power supply
• Enlisted a mechanic friend to swap out parts
• Performed ritualistic dances around it (okay, maybe not, but I was getting desperate)

Nothing worked. The PC sat there, gathering dust, mocking my efforts.

Hope Springs Eternal

Fast forward to Christmas 2023. Filled with holiday spirit (and maybe a bit too much eggnog), I decided to give it another go. Spoiler alert: it failed. Again.

In a fit of frustration, I sold off the CPU and RAM, convinced they were the problem. Little did I know, I was about to embark on an even wilder ride.

The Plot Thickens

Summer 2024 rolls around, and I’m back at it. This time, I go all out:

• New Ryzen 5 series 16-core CPU
• Fresh Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RGB 32GB RAM
• A prayer to the PC gods

Result? Absolutely nothing. Not even a flicker. At this point, I was ready to turn the whole thing into a very expensive planter.

Enter the Hero: Gareth Richardson

In my desperation, I reached out to a local PC repair guy, Gareth. Our phone conversation went something like this:

“I’ve been working on it for ten years, this has got me stumbled.”

Gareth, bless him, came to my house and spent an hour trying everything he could think of. When that failed, he took the PC home for further investigation.

The Plot Twist

After a day of testing, Gareth uncovered a series of surprises:

• My CPU worked perfectly in his rig
• The “new” motherboard was actually faulty
• My GPU was fried
• The old RAM was dead too

It was like solving a murder mystery, but the victim was my poor PC.

In the end, Gareth worked his magic. He updated the firmware on the old motherboard, swapped out the fried components, and finally – FINALLY – the PC booted up.
